I LOST MY RING, WHAT DO I DO?

From dry land, to sandy beaches, and water recoveries

If you have lost a ring “stay calm!” we can help!

What to do first?

1st

Stay calm, mark out the area you lost the ring on Google maps. Save the area to your phone.

2nd

Try your best to recap the exact moment you believe you lost it. Believe it or not, many people have felt their rings fall off their fingers and it usually happens for many reasons. Maybe you were throwing something, or taking off a glove and your ring got caught and slipped off your finger into some tall grass or in a snow storm, or maybe it’s possible you went swimming when you were at the beach, no matter the scenario, & for the best chance at finding your ring again, you will need to know your approximate location, and if at all possible (and you have cell service) then open up whatever map system you use and pin point the area your at and send it to yourself for reference. Any information you can refer to will aid in the successful recovery of your lost ring. Especially if you end up using a service like the one we provide.

3rd

Our team of experienced detectorists have been to all types of possible scenarios you could imagine, and we have a high success rate, however keep in mind each situation is unique and the longer you leave your lost ring the harder it becomes to find it and the less success our team has of finding it.

LAND OR SAND

On land, if the area is not populated by many people then the better chance at a successful recovery over a longer period of time.

The higher foot traffic an area has the greater the chance the item will not get recovered the longer you wait to call.

For example

If you went for a hike in the woods on a remote trail a month ago and you are only finding out about this type of service now and decided to call, then there is a good chance no one has seen it and picked it up nor has the ring had a chance to settle under the earth making this a highly possibility of a successful recovery.

BEACH & WATER RECOVERIES

However, if you went to the beach and you were in a highly populated beach and dropped your ring in the sand, I would say that after you have lost your ring you have between 24 to 72hours before the chance of finding your ring drops below 50%

SHALLOW WATER

Now if you loose your ring in the water close to the waters edge you have hours not days before the chance of a successful recovery drops below %50. The reason for this is that water constantly moves the sand where the water meets the beach, especially on larger lakes where there is a constant wave action, and could Bury the ring fairly deep in a short period of time. In some cases a ring could bury deeper than some metal detectors will be able to detect.

SANDY WATER AREA (shallow)

If you drop your ring in the water with a high concentration of sand such as sandbanks Provincial Park. over 3 ft in depth and less than 5 feet, then the chances are greater of a successful recovery over a longer period of time. Infact we have found rings that were dropped in the water years ago (up to a decade ago) on a few occasions but those body of waters were on smaller lakes where it doesn’t get much movement in comparison to a larger lake such as Lake Ontario.

Also if you loose your ring in water less than 5ft deep it is easier to be able to record the location of where this happened.

DEEP WATER RECOVERIES

(Diver required)

Once you are over the 5 ft depth, then chances are greater you were swimming and being able to pinpoint the location become almost impossible. This means a recovery service now needs to bring an experienced diver and gridding an area under water is costly and timely, unless you drop the ring next to a dock or a land mark you can use as a reference point making the situation much easier for the person trying to find your ring.

CONCLUSION

The best chance at finding your ring is to be able to mark the location as best you can at the time, write down as many details as you can remember as to what you were doing at the time you lost your ring, answer the questions your ring recovery specialist asks you as truthful as possible so they can use the information to determine the best place to conduct the search, and call in an experienced detectorist within the first 12 to 24hours for your best chance at a successful recovery. if you have never used a metal detector before and thought you should buy a cheap one or even rent one? I would highly recommend not doing that as any experienced detectorist will tell you, it takes approximately 100 hours of using a machine to start to understand what the machine is actually telling you and can take years of use before really understanding how to use one properly. If you rent a machine thinking you will find your ring the most likely scenario will be, you will spend hours digging every beep and you will come out with nothing but a bag full of trash. I’m not saying that’s not a good thing to be cleaning up our beaches and water ways, but you’ll loose valuable time needed to be able to successfully find your ring. And you’ll do nothing but get yourself frustrated and irritable.
